Mat Pilates Instructor / by Laura Scanlon

As I am always looking to learn and broaden my knowledge in the fitness industry I decided to get certified as a pilates mat instructor. Balance Body training programme is one of the best and most recognised in the world. I have now completed the Balance Body Pilates Mat Instructor 1 & 2 course which is all levels for mat related pilates. I completed this Performace Pilates in South Dublin. It was 2 weekends of intense movement, theory and anatomy. The teacher Sarah Mac Lachlann is the Balanced Body faculty member for Ireland and has been an educator for nearly 10 years.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a type of exercise designed by Joseph Pilates to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility and improve overall health.  Mat pilates is performed on a mat and with specially designed equipment. I incorporate Pilates into my fitness regime to work on my flexibility and core strength. I have found pilates really good for lengthening out tight muscles from training. My hamstrings are an area that I suffer from tightness from years of athletics so I find each week I make progress in lengthening them out.  I also find Pilates a great stress reliever and also very challenging on the core. The core is the centre of our body and can be also known as the powerhouse. So if we think about the core we realise that it holds everything together. If we are not strong in our centre then our posture suffers as well as a lot of other areas of the body. Pilates focuses on how to move better so we can transfer this into everyday life.
