Our ‘How She Does It’ interview series captures the variety of ways women live their lives and incorporate active and healthy habits. Q:Tell us about yourself (Name, age, occupation, location, family, interests).

A: My name is Laura Scanlon I am 28 I am a Model, Fitness Trainer & a Fitness Blogger. I currently live in Cape Town, South Africa but I am from Dublin, Ireland. I am the middle child to an older sister & younger brother.

I love the gym, running, coffee lover, blogging, cinema, socializing with friends & family, reading biographies & a sucker for a love story.

Q: What does active living mean to you?

A: Active living to me is about making fitness a lifestyle choice. I incorporate being active into my life by making healthy choices and making fitness a part of my daily routine.

Q: What do you like to do to stay active?

A: Well as a personal trainer I train clients throughout the day but I personally love high-intensityworkouts, running, yoga & hiking

Q: What is your daily or weekly routine (if you have one)? 

A: Wake up, stretch, have a healthy breakfast (oats, blueberries, chia seeds, greek yogurt), train clients, maybe a casting for a job, lunch (omelette with avocado, spinach & onion), train myself, have a juice, blog, train clients, dinner (Chicken breast, vegetables, quinoa), read/tv, bed

Q: What daily habits keep you fit and healthy? 

A: Exercising daily but also listening to my body & knowing when to take it easier.

Making healthy food choices, eating lots of fresh vegetables & fruit. I always have a green juice when possible. I take vitamin C, vitamin b12, calcium & magnesium, omega 3 daily. A good night’s sleep is essential for recovery.

Q: Favorite healthy meal?

A: I love Mexican style quinoa with chicken & avocado & a fresh juice.

Q: What (or who) inspires and motivates you?

A: I try my best to be my own motivation. Results inspire me to keep getting better, especially when I get faster on the track running.

That feeling is amazing for me. Being stronger than I was a few weeks before motivates me every session.

Q: How do you overcome negative thoughts?

A: Everyone has them and they are normal to have but I find it’s important to not dwell on negative thoughts. I allow myself that minute or so to have them, acknowledge them and move on by thinking of how far I have come.

Q: How do you manage days or periods where you are not as motivated?

A: We all have those days or periods and women especially because at different times of the month we feel better than other days.

I just make sure not to have too many days of these days. Its important not to blame your body’s menstrual cycle because the days you feel the worst are the days you should get up and exercise.

The feeling after a workout that you really didn’t want to do usually makes you feel amazing.

Q: How do you get back in your active routine when you fall off the bandwagon?

A: Slowly and gradually! It’s about making smarter, healthier food choices.

Like changing the biscuits with your tea to a protein ball or a handful of blueberries. Cutting out the potatoes and having sweet potatoes. Moving your walk up to a light jog, adding in some bodyweight squats & lunges.

Small steps make to great things. Stop looking for excuses and just do it.

Q: What do you do to treat yourself? 

A: I love buying gym gear & skin care products.

Q: Top 3 songs on your workout playlist?

A: Always House Music

Q: Top 3 things you would bring to a deserted island with you?

A: My boyfriend, Coconut Water, Jellies.

Q: If we took a peek inside your gym bag, what would we find right now?

A: Water, towel, earphones, sports bra, banana, nothing too exciting.

Q: What do you do to relax and recharge?

A: Go for coffee, or when I am home I love going for walks with my mum & sister and just chat or the cinema with a big bowl of popcorn.

Athletes – I always dreamed of being in the Olympics when I was young so watching the Olympics this year has inspired me to run more
